Half the Block, Two-Thirds the Price

Everybody treats a half block like half a block. Half the size, half the cost, round it off, move on. That assumption is costing you money on every bid, and most masonry estimating software is built to make the same mistake.

A half doesn't cost half. It costs about two-thirds of a full unit.

Sit with that for a second. A half does half the work of a full block — covers half the length — but you pay roughly two-thirds the price for it. That's a premium of about a third on every spot a half lands. It's not a discount unit. It's your most expensive block per inch of wall.

And you use more of them than you think

Halves aren't a corner case. They're everywhere a wall stops being a clean, full-length run. Every wall end. Every opening jamb. Every course that turns a corner. Every length that doesn't divide even on the block.

On a real building that's not a handful — it's hundreds. Hundreds of premium units, each one carrying that third-over cost, every one of them a separate piece somebody has to order, stage, and lay.

So the count matters in the one direction you can't fix later. If your takeoff is short on halves, your bid is short on money — and you don't find out until the order comes in heavier than the number you handed the GC.

A half is its own order

Here's the other half of the problem. A half isn't a full block you cut on site. It's its own unit — its own SKU on the order.

If it's not on the takeoff as its own line, one of two things happens. You forget it, and now the crew's on the wall short a piece, waiting. Or you guess, and you're either paying for halves you didn't need or scrambling for halves you did. Neither one is estimating. That's gambling with a material that carries a premium.

A half costs me near what a full costs and covers half the wall. I need to know exactly how many, not a guess off the square footage. Get that number wrong and the whole bid's wrong — and it's wrong on the side that comes out of my pocket.

You can't get a half count from area

This is the part the math can't fake. Area math gives you square footage. Square footage gives you a rough block count and a waste factor. It will never give you a count of halves, because a half isn't an area — it's a specific unit that exists in a specific place.

The only way to know how many halves a building needs is to lay the wall and see where they fall. Where the run ends. Where the opening cuts in. Where the corner turns. The halves come out of the coursing — they're a result of how the wall actually goes together, not a percentage you sprinkle on top of a square-foot number.

A tool that hands you a real half count had to have laid the wall to get it. A tool that started from areas can't — there's nowhere in that model for a half to live.

What The Masonry Modeler does

The Masonry Modeler starts from the coursing, so the halves are already there. You draw the wall, it renders it the way it gets laid, and the halves fall where they fall — ends, jambs, corners, odd lengths.

The takeoff lists them as their own line, with a real count, priced as the premium unit they are. Not a percentage. Not folded into the full-block number. A count you can order from and a number you can bid on.
