Nobody makes you draw a trash enclosure. Nobody makes you draw an infill, a screen wall, or the little addition on the back of a school. The submittal schedule names the jobs the architect wants to see, and on everything else you're free to go lay it.
I draw them anyway. Not because I like drawing. Because of what it costs me when I don't.
The special order gets ordered right
This is the one that pays for the drawing by itself.
A block wall isn't one product. Bullnose and double bullnose aren't a checkbox on a standard unit — they're their own SKUs, ordered on their own line, priced on their own line. 8816 and 8816bb are not the same thing. Neither is 888. Corners order separately. Halves order separately. Lintel units and bond beam units order separately. Every one of those shows up on the supplier's invoice as its own item because that's how it ships and that's how it gets made.
A square-foot takeoff cannot produce those counts. Not because the estimator is careless — because the method doesn't count pieces. It counts area and multiplies by a factor. Area doesn't know where the corners are. It doesn't know which return is bullnosed and which one isn't. It gives you a total and leaves you to guess the breakdown.
Guess it two ways and both cost you.
Guess short. Non-stock units have lead time measured in weeks, not days. The crew gets to that return and there's nothing on the pallet. Now you're stopped, or somebody makes a call at the wall and lays it with the wrong unit, and you live with that corner for the life of the building.
Guess long. Special units generally don't go back. The supplier didn't stock them; he made them for you. Whatever you over-ordered sits on a pallet at the end of the job and comes straight out of the margin. Nobody itemises that loss. It just quietly isn't there at closeout.
Here's the part that's easy to miss even when you do have a set.
On a recent project the per-sheet piece tables added up to 12,624 units. The order that went to the supplier was 11,485. The difference is 1,139 corner units — corners that appear on two elevations because a corner belongs to both walls that meet there. That's not an error in the sheets. That's how a corner gets laid. It shows on the elevation running east and it shows on the elevation running north, because the mason working either wall needs to see it.
But if the set doesn't say so, one of two things happens. You order 12,624 and buy eleven hundred corners you don't need. Or somebody spots the double and pulls the number down by hand, guesses at the overlap, and drops corners you do need.
That's nine percent of the order riding on whether one line of reconciliation exists on one sheet. And nobody finds out which way it went until delivery day.
A takeoff gives you a number. A shop drawing gives you a number you can check.
The crew stops guessing
Watch a wall go up without a set. The mason gets to a condition he hasn't seen — a return, a jog, an opening that doesn't land on module — and he stops. He looks at the plan, works out the coursing in his head, maybe walks over and asks somebody. Then he lays it.
Multiply that by every man on the wall and every morning of the job.
And they don't all answer it the same way. Put two masons on the same long wall, one starting from each end, and let them each decide where the cut goes. They're both being reasonable. They'll still meet in the middle with the bond off, and one of them is taking work back down.
When a mason can see the course, the cut, and the unit on paper, he doesn't work it out at the wall. He lays it. The layout question got answered once, in the office, by whoever was going to answer it anyway — instead of five times on the scaffold by five different people who might not answer it the same way.
The cuts change too. With a drawing you know what's coming, so the cuts get made ahead — in the yard, at the saw, in a batch. Without one you cut on demand, which means somebody walks off the wall to the saw every time, and the wall waits.
None of that shows up as a line item. It shows up as the job taking longer than you bid it.
The bond shows what a decision actually does
An architect moves an opening four inches. It's four inches. On his drawing it costs nothing.
On the wall it might cost a cut in every course beside that opening. It might move where the halves land for the rest of the elevation. It might put a four-inch sliver in a place everybody's going to look at for thirty years.
You can't argue that from a floor plan, because a floor plan doesn't show coursing. On a shop drawing you can point at it. Here's what it looks like now, here's what it looks like if we move it, here's the cut that shows up. Same with a GC who wants a dimension that isn't modular — the drawing shows him what he's actually asking for.
That conversation happens on paper for free, or it happens in the field for real money after the wall is up. It's the same conversation either way. The only variable is whether anybody's laid block yet.
The dimensions get approved before the wall goes up
This one reads the least dramatic and it's the one that saves the most arguments.
A shop drawing is a document you submit and somebody signs. Rough openings get confirmed against the door and window provider's own shops before the jambs get laid, not after. Level elevations get confirmed. Everything gets agreed in writing ahead of the work rather than remembered differently later. Anybody who's laid a wall to the plan dimension and then watched the frame show up an inch wide knows how that ends. The frame is already built. The wall is already grouted. Somebody is paying to fix one of them, and the argument over which one runs a lot shorter when both sets of shops were compared before either was built.
Then when something does change — and something always changes — you're not arguing from memory. You're pointing at an approved document that says what the wall was supposed to be and what got submitted before anybody started. A change order backed by a stamped drawing is a conversation. A change order backed by what you remember agreeing to in a trailer in March is a fight.
So I draw them
Not because the submittal schedule asks. Because the order goes out right, the crew doesn't stop, the argument happens on paper, and the dimensions are signed before the wall exists.
That used to mean graph paper and an evening. Now the wall gets built once in The Masonry Modeler and the sheets come out of it — coursing numbered, units tagged, piece counts per sheet with the corner overlap stated, so the number you order from is the number you can check.
The drawing was always worth making. It just used to cost an evening to find out.
