A masonry shop drawing is the coursed elevation that proves the wall before anybody lays a block. And here's the part that catches new contractors off guard: it's not the architect's drawing. It's yours. You have to make it.
The architect gives you design intent — a wall, a height, some openings. The shop drawing is where you turn that into the wall as it actually gets built, course by course, and submit it for approval before you're allowed to start. Get it right and the job moves. Get it wrong, or leave something out, and you wait.
Who actually draws it
Construction drawings come from the architect and the engineer. The shop drawing comes from you — the masonry contractor, or the detailer you hire. You take their intent and you detail how the wall goes together: the coursing, the units, the reinforcing, the joints. Then it goes back to the architect and engineer for review.
You don't order block or lay a course until it comes back stamped approved. On most jobs that review runs two to three weeks. That clock is the reason a missed detail hurts so much — a rejected submittal doesn't just cost a redraw, it costs another trip through the queue.
What it has to show
A shop drawing the reviewer will approve has to show the wall the way it's built, not the way it's billed. That means all of this, coordinated and drawn before you start:
- Coursing — every course, the full elevation. Vertical dimensions land on the 8-inch module, and openings and sills line up to it so you're not cutting block just to finish a wall.
- Special shapes — corners, bond beam, lintel, and sill units, called out where they fall. Not lumped into a field of stretchers.
- Openings — every door and window with its size and course location, with the lintel and jamb units resolved around it.
- Reinforcing — rebar size, spacing, and placement in the cores and bond beams, with the cover and lap-splice lengths the code calls for. The reviewer checks these closely.
- Joint reinforcement — the ladder or truss mesh, with gauge and spacing.
- Control joints — located and spaced on the elevation (for CMU, generally no more than 25 feet apart).
- Finishes — if it's architectural block, the split face, ground face, or scored bands shown in their real coursing positions.
Why it's the slowest paper in the package
Every one of those has to be right, coordinated with the others, and drawn before you build. Do it by hand, or send it to a detailing service, and it's days of work and a fee per sheet — plus a full redraw every time the plans change. Miss a detail and the submittal comes back rejected, and you're back in the two-to-three-week line. That's why the shop drawing is the slowest, most expensive piece of paper on a lot of jobs.
The shop drawing isn't extra work. It's the wall, drawn before you lay it. The only question is whether you draw it by hand or the model hands it to you.
It doesn't have to be a separate job
If the wall is built course by course in a model — every unit tagged as you draw it — the shop drawing falls out of that automatically. Coursing numbered. Openings labeled.
